Raymond E. Spencer Obituary

Raymond E. Spencer, 83, of Portland passed away on May 2, 2018, at the Barron Center surrounded by his family from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Raymond was born on July 6, 1934, to Raymond Spencer and Diane (Guay) Spencer both of Lewiston, Maine. He leaves behind his loving and supportive wife of more than 60 years, Janice Louise (Simpson) Spencer and his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Maureen Spencer of Lewiston. He is predeceased by a son Raymond J. Spencer and is survived by his son Scott Spencer and his wife, Peggy (Grenier) Spencer, of Portland and his daughter, Bethany Austin and her husband, David Austin, of Bangor. Raymond will be missed by 7 grandchildren, Bethany Geiger, Gabe Spencer, Jordan Spencer McMahon, Keith and Michael Austin, and Clyde and Henry Spencer, 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Lewiston High School in 1952, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a medical corpsman. He proposed to Janice Louise on their first date and they were married in 1957. He later graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1963 and began his career with Commercial Union Insurance Company, retiring in 1994. During this time he was also a certified Maine Guide and enjoyed the Katahdin Lakes Region with his family.

He was a member of the Woodfords Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests were vast - too many to list. However, some standouts are gourmet cooking, stone cutting and jewelry design, golf, sailing his Bristol, and entertaining audiences as a professional magician.  He shared a love for travel with Janice Louise, visiting several U.S. and European landmarks, as well as enjoying many cruises together. More importantly, it was his roles as husband, father, and grandfather that gave him the most joy.

Raymond’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Barron Center for the loving care they provided to him. Raymond was also very thankful for the many friends he made there and those friendships added to the quality of his life while at the Barron Center.

Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018, from 4:00-6: 00 pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland. A Funeral Service will follow at 6:00 pm. Burial will be at a later date in the Maine Veteran Cemetery in Augusta.
