Mary G. (Portas) Brett

June 22, 1939 ~ January 13, 2018 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Portland—Mary G. Brett, 78, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on June 22, 1939 in Portland, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Morrissey) Portas.

Mary attended Portland High School graduating with the Class of 1957. While in high school,Mary was very active in the Andrews Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps. On May 5, 1962, she married Ralph Brett and they started their family which included four boys. Mary loved her family dearly and they meant the world to her. She was also known for her cooking and she loved hosting parties where friends and family could gather to share a laugh and to make memories. Mary was very passionate about her children; she attended all their sporting events and activities. She also was a den mother for their Cub Scout Troop.

Mary’s vocation was in the medical field as a medical transcriptionst. She was employed by many medical professionals in the greater Portland area throughout her career, including Osteopathic Hospital & Maine Medical Center & Rheumatology Associates. Mary eventually was a mentor & teacher to others entering the field of medical transcription.

Mary stayed in contact with many of her classmates and maintained lifelong friendships. Mary was active in the community, playing Bocce at the Italian Heritage Center & being a member of the Portland/Deering Thanksgiving Alumni Dance committee. Later in her life, Mary was able to spend her time with her grandchildren. As with her four boys, her grandchildren filled her life with joy and happiness.

Along with her parents, Mary was predeceased by three of her brothers: Stanley, Joseph & Tony and one grandson, Bradley Ginn, in addition to many close friends & family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Ralph Brett Sr and four sons: Ralph Jr and his wife Debbie; Peter and his wife Anne-Marie; Michael and his wife Lisha; and Steven, as well as 3 granddaughters: Katelyn (Brett) DeBardino, Courtney and Amanda Brett & her brother Peter Portas.

Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 4-7pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 10am at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
