June D. (Daley) Buskey

June D. Buskey, 100, of Portland, ME, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 after a brief illness.  She was born on July 3, 1917 in Bloomfield, VT to Daniel and Phoebe (Bergeron) Daley, the middle of 11 children.

Although she grew up in VT, June graduated from North Stratford High School in North Stratford, NH in 1935.  On May 4, 1937 she married Edward Buskey and the couple moved to Lawrence, MA before returning back to the Bloomfield/North Stratford area where their sons, Edward Jr. and Philip were born in 1938 and 1941 respectively.  In 1942, June and Eddie moved their family to Peaks Island, ME when Eddie took a job with the Army Corps of Engineers, building gun emplacements on the islands.  During their time there, June was very involved in the community, including acting as a den mother for the Cub/Boy Scouts, serving on the PTA, and singing in the church choir.  She was famous for baking donuts for the church & school bake sales, often times having sold all of them before they reached their destination. 

In 1954 June began working at Porteous Department Store in Portland as seasonal help, but soon took on a permanent position in the children’s department.  Her entire working career was spent at Porteous Department Store until her retirement at age 70 in 1987.

In 1959 the family moved to mainland Portland for the winter and then moved to the East Deering area in 1965.  June continued to live in their East Deering home after Eddie’s passing in July 1997 and remained there until her own passing. 

June was very independent, a fact in which she took great pride.  She was not afraid to speak her mind and was protective of her family and friends.  She enjoyed gardening, baking, making jams and jellies (especially apple and strawberry rhubarb), knitting, and playing cards.  She was a lifetime member of the Rebekah’s and the Order of the Eastern Star.

June was predeceased by: her parents; six brothers and four sisters; and her husband of 60 years.  She is survived by: her two sons, Edward E. Buskey Jr. and his wife, Linda of Northwood, NH and Philip Buskey and his wife Kathy of Falmouth, ME; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and several adopted grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Brooklawn Memorial Park followed by a reception at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave.
