John G. DePalma Sr.

November 20, 1934 ~ November 16, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Cumberland –John G. DePalma,Sr. 82, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at Maine Medical Center. 

 He was born on November 20, 1934 in Mineola New York, the son of Peter and Nellie (Simpson) DePalma.  He graduated from Portland High School class of 1954. After graduating high school John went on to serve his country in the United States Airforce serving during the Korean War and serving for 8 years and reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.

John married the love of his life Gloria Ann Dyer on June 16, 1954 they shared over 50 years together before her passing in 2006. John and Gloria had 4 children, and raising their family was the most important thing to them.

John spent 19 years working for the City of Portland holding many positions over that period of time including treasurer, tax collector and finishing up as Finance Director. Finance was a profession that he was very passionate about and was the first recipient of the Dr. Jackson R.E. Phillips award in recognition for his leadership in and significant contributions to professional treasury management. This award was presented to him from the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada.  

After leaving the City of Portland, John spent 24 years working for the Northern New England Conference of Seventh-Day Adventist. He was a godly man and lived his life with a strong faith and conviction in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Family was very important to him and he never wanted to miss a game or event that his grandkids were taking part in. He was also known for his love of pasta, especially Pasta Fazul and Linguine. John not only touched the lives of his family but of everyone he came in contact with from his friends to the many organizations he supported over the years. He will be remembered has a loving father, friend and colleague to many people. 

He is survived by his four children Holly Miranda and her spouse Charlie Miranda, John DePalma Jr & his spouse Nancy DePalma, David DePalma his spouse Yanise DePalma, Sally Greenleaf & and her spouse Jeremy Greenleaf  also by  11 grandchildren (one of them predeceased) and 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews 

Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:30AM at A.T. Hutchins Funeral home. Burial will be private at Brooklawn Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, if friends or family desire a memorial contribution can be made in John’s  name to Pine Tree Academy;
