Jennie "Joyce" (MacEwen) Coldwell

Jennie “Joyce” (MacEwen) Coldwell passed away July 6, 2018.  She was born in Holden, ME on December 22, 1922 to Benjamin B. and Mary E. (Cole) MacEwen. 

Joyce graduated from North Orrington Grammar School and from the Class of 1940 at Brewer High School.  She married James “Jim” Edwin Coldwell in Nashville, TN on September 30, 1944 while Jim was in the United States Air Force stationed in Tennessee.  She was widowed in 1990 after 45 years of marriage.  They lived in Orrington, ME, Woburn, MA, and Portland, ME where they retired and then moved to Brewer, ME.   She later moved back to Portland to be closer to her children and grandchildren, and last resided at Northfield Green in Portland before moving to Pine Point Center in Scarborough.

Joyce attended Calvary Baptist Church in Brewer and Payson Park Evangelical Church in Westbrook (now First Evangelical Free Church of America).  She retired from Campbell Payson and Noyes (now Beacon Insurance).  Prior to that, she worked at First National Stores in Maine and Massachusetts.

Joyce was predeceased by:  her parents; son, Donald Lothrop Coldwell; brothers, John, Beatty, Gordon, and Maynard MacEwen; sisters, Isabel (who died in infancy), Hazel Ramsay, Edna Elliott, and Kathleen Mitchell; and son-in-law, Ralph Holmes.  She is survived by:  her son, Arthur James Coldwell and his wife Pamela; daughter, Margaret Jean Holmes; 6 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, for all of which she enjoyed making quilts; and daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Coffin) Coldwell.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.  A graveside service will take place at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Central Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, 281 Civic Dr., Augusta.
