Gorham - Helen C Danforth, 95, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Gorham House after a long illness.

 

Helen, the daughter of George and Annie Young of Garfield Plantation (Ashland), Me was born on April 7, 1921.

 

After completing high school, Helen obtained her degree in education and taught for 20 years in the Falmouth school system. She went on to complete her Masters degree in Art and became the Art Supervisor in Falmouth.

 

She is survived by her son, Danny (Sharon) Danforth and their children, Michael (Rebecca) Danforth and Richard Danforth, her daughter, Cheryl (Gary) Cheney and their children, Tanya (Tim) Theriault, Tracy Cheney, and Christopher Cheney, and 4 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Abigail, Danforth and Isaac Theriault. In addition to her parents, Helen is predeceased by her husband, Arthur, brothers, Byron and James Young, and her great-grandson Joshua Danforth.

 

Although most of her life she lived in Portland, Helen and Arthur spent 16 years in Pompano Beach, Florida before moving back to Maine in 2005.

 

Helen was an excellent knitter and she loved to read. She treasured her family and friends. Her faith was very evident in her daily life and sustained her until the end.

 

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Gorham House and also to the dedicated and loving staff at Compassus Hospice who took such great care of our Mom.

 

A private memorial service is planned in the spring. Arrangements are under the guidance of A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made in Helen’s name to: the Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
