Dorothy J. Gerry

Dorothy J. Gerry, 89, of Portland, died Sunday July 16, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Manor.  Born in Portland on June 19, 1928, she was a daughter of Joseph and Hedwig Groth Johnson. She attended Portland Schools and graduated from Deering High the Class of 1946.

Dorothy married Irvin A. Gerry on her 20th birthday in 1948.  While living in California, she worked at Lockheed Martin and upon returning to Maine she started her career at Casco Bank, retiring after 30 years.  Following her retirement, she worked for the PROP Foster Grandparent Program as “Nana Dot” and a teacher’s aide for 1st and 2nd grade at Longfellow School for 15 years.

Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star and attended the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church for 60 years.

Dorothy was known for her beautiful knitting up until she injured her shoulder at which time she took up reading, crossword Puzzles and bingo.

She was predeceased by her husband Irvin in 1980, just a few days before their 32nd wedding anniversary.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Noyes and her husband Dan of Allentown, NH, a son David Gerry of Portland, her grandchildren Joshua Noyes, Abigail Stelmach, Stephanie, David Jr., Andrew   and Christine Gerry and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by a brother Lawrence Johnson and his wife Mary Lou of Glastobury, CT.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cape Memory Care who lovingly took care of her for 3 years and St. Joseph’s Manor for the excellent care they provided during the last 2 months of her life.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday July 27, 2017 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland.  Burial will private.

In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake 35 Acadia Rd, Casco, ME 04015.
