Bert Lee Campbell

Bert Lee Campbell passed away February 13, 2017.  He was born July 10, 1925 in South Portland to Harold and Virgie (Johnson) Campbell.

Bert received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine in Orono and worked for the State of Maine Department of Transportation for 45 years.  He also retired from the United States Army as a Major after serving during WWII.

Bert was past president of the Winthrop Rotary, a trustee at the Winthrop Library, and he also tutored the Winthrop basketball team in algebra.

Bert enjoyed singing in his church choir, as well as, spontaneously anytime.  He also loved to garden and read, especially historical novels.  He had a great sense of humor and made friends easily.

Bert was preceded in death by:  his parents, Harold and Virgie Campbell; sister, Lillian Buckley; brother, Jack Campbell; and son, Stephen Campbell.  He is survived by:  his daughter, Gail Straw and her husband Jim; son Joseph Campbell; five grandchildren, David Campbell and his wife Meredith, Sarah Libby and her husband Dana, Meg Campbell, Michelle Campbell, and Nickolas Campbell; four great-grandchildren, Amy Campbell, Nora Campbell, Nathan Libby, and Joshua Libby; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Forest City Cemetery, 232 Lincoln St., South Portland, followed by a reception at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.
