Welcome to the memorial page for

Augustine "Gus" Profenno

March 10, 1932 ~ September 24, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Augustine (Gus) Profenno passed away peacefully Sept. 24th at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Augustine Profenno Sr. and Julia (Cherico) Profenno. He grew up in the Libbytown neighborhood of Portland, and attended Portland High School, where he was known as "Bones."  He played many sports, and went on to play baseball for a team in Canada called St. Georges.  When he was getting ready to join one of the most well-known traveling semi-pro clubs in the U.S., called House of David, Gus received his draft notice for the Army.  He served two years in Korea from 1952-1954.

After the service, he eventually went to work for Noyes Tire Co., advancing from tire-changer to manager.  He later went on the road as a salesman, working for Yudy’s and Tire Warehouse, before retiring in 2003.

He was the proud Dad of John, Ronald, and Pamela.  He coached the boys’ little league team at one time in Sagamore Village. He loved going to hockey games with his daughter Pam. She was “Daddy’s girl.” Later in life, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and play sports. He had a very special bond with his grandson, Billy. He closely followed Billy's career in music, and the two talked on the phone almost every morning or night. Gus and Billy had many adventures from the time Billy was little. He loved all his grandchildren: Erika, with her basketball and field hockey; Jenna, his sweet girl, especially in her pretty black dress; Anthony, of whom he was very proud for achieving the rank of captain in the Army; and Crystal, who brought him joy when he got to take her out for her birthdays.

Gus was married to his wife, Shirley, for 64 years. They enjoyed many trips together and filled their lives with lots of laughter and teasing. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pam, and his son, Ron. He is survived by his wife Shirley, his son John, and his special son-in-law, Larry Libby. He will also be remembered by his sister Margaret, brother Dick, and youngest sister, Teresa, as well as his many nieces and nephews, among them his nephew Michael Dumas and niece Cheryl Sullivan, with whom he had very close relationships, and two very special Great Grand Children, Logan and Zoey.  He also gained many friends over the years through work and at Grace Bible Church, Gorham.  Gus will be remembered for his devotion, love and care for his family throughout his many years.

We will love you forever and always.

Visitation will be Friday, September 29th at 1pm at The Greater Grace Bible Church, 74 Deering Rd, Gorham, ME with a service to follow at 2pm. Graveside service at 3:30pm at Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery, 2002 Congress St, Portland.
