Peter Benjamin Gellerson

Peter Benjamin Gellerson, 75, passed away on October 3, 2024, at his home in Gray, Maine. Born on April 12, 1949 in Skowhegan, Peter was the son of George Benjamin and Anna Wyman Gellerson. The family moved from North Anson to Falmouth in 1958. In his youth, he was a dedicated golfer and loved all things baseball. He was an avid collector of coins, stamps, and baseball cards and had a keen interest in geology. Peter attended Falmouth schools where he played Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and basketball. He was a proud member of the Falmouth Class of 1967 and graduated from USM with a degree in Education. While there, he played baseball and held the position of Athletic Trainer and was blessed to meet his lifelong friend, Peter DiPietrantonio. Peter's first summer job was for a Commercial Street ice company delivering blocks of ice to summer camps in the Lakes Region area. The next year, following in his dad's footsteps, he began working summers at Blue Rock Industries in Westbrook. He was a dedicated employee there for 35 years; earning his nickname Peter Paver. He traveled all over the State of Maine and it was rare that there was a road or driveway Peter wasn't familiar with. At Blue Rock, he met his treasured friend, Ernie Kilbride, with whom he enjoyed many good times on the golf course and at the Mariners hockey games. After his Blue Rock career, Peter spent several years as President of Lathrop Property Management. It was at BRI where he met his blue-eyed girl, Deb Sullivan. In doing so, he was welcomed into her large family and felt so blessed to have them in his life. He took pride in employing many of his family and daughter's friends with summer jobs or having them join in on family vacations and extended stays at the lake. He was known to the family for having accurate weather forecasts, the best penmanship, possessing a vast knowledge of historical events and just being Uncle Pete. He was so appreciative to those special family members who offered help and support over these last 7 years. Peter and Deb welcomed their daughter Kelley in 1987. Peter cherished his daughter and son-in-law Matt and was so proud of their accomplishments. They blessed him with two beautiful granddaughters who brought out the sparkle in his eye and fondly referred to him as Papa. He loved sharing his knowledge of birds with the girls and blueberry picking with them at the lake. One of his most special memories is taking the family to St. John, Virgin Islands and watching the excitement of the girls as they explored the island. Peter was passionate about high school basketball and was proud to have spent 18 years serving as a high school basketball official. He was also a long-time community volunteer including being a member of the Maine Irish Children's Program, where children from Belfast, Northern Ireland were brought to Maine. It was through this program he met Kevin, his "Irish son." He served over 15 years on the Gray Planning Board with his valued friend Don Hutchings. He was twice elected to serve on the Gray Town Council. He served on the Executive Board of the Little Sebago Lake Association and the Lyons Point Road Association. He was a volunteer at the Maine Irish Heritage Center and was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Windham. Peter spent his married life with Deb on the shores of Little Sebago Lake. He could be seen pushing cart loads of wood up the hill and into the basement for winter, picking up the never-ending pine branches, and working on his beautiful green lawn. Peter and Deb enjoyed traveling together with their close friends and family, especially Jim and Judee Jagow. Together, Peter and Deb enjoyed many National Park journeys and European adventures. The family expresses deep appreciation to Jerry and Lynn, his amazing caregivers with Hospice; to Diana for her exceptional care, and to Mike for being with him every step of the way. Peter is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah Sullivan Gellerson; daughter Kelley Mingo and her husband Matthew of Falmouth and granddaughters Amelia and Bridget. He also leaves behind his brother, Mark Gellerson and wife Evi of Bethesda, MD and their families, and his Sullivan extended family. And his cat, Ollie. Peter was a quiet and gentle man and he touched the lives of many. Graveside Services will be held at Blanchard Cemetery, 215 Winn Rd, Falmouth, ME on Friday October 11th at 1:00 PM.
