Joseph Francis Comeau January 18, 1946 May 18, 2014 Joseph F. Comeau, 68, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday May 18, 2014. One of eight children, he was born to Thomas J. Comeau and Marguerite (Thompson) Comeau on January 18, 1946, in Augusta, Maine. As a boy his family moved to Portland, where he attended St. Dominic's Parochial School, King Junior High School and Portland High School. He then went on to serve in the United States Army. In 1965, while home on Christmas leave, Joe met the love of his life, Norma Jean Osteen. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1966, the two were promptly married. They moved their quickly-growing family to Windham where they raised their five children. Joe worked as a self employed flooring technician throughout his adult life. Despite humble beginnings, he went on to own two businesses over the years. Later in life Joe worked as a sub-contractor, most recently for Lowe's. Joe was a consummate perfectionist, and treated every job, no matter how small, as though he were working in his own home. He loved his work and was a true craftsman. Joe was a "no nonsense" kind of guy, and had zero patience for incompetence. One of his favorite sayings was "You can't fix stupid". Although he will surely be remembered by many for his wit and brutal honesty, he will also be remembered as one of the most hardworking, selfless, generous, and kindhearted men one could ever have the pleasure of knowing. Joe loved the ocean. As a teenager he had his own lobster boat and would pull traps from Casco Bay. He was a certified diver and enjoyed many dives with his brother Liger. He loved to fish for stripers and smelts and many a fond family memory were made fishing. He was also an avid NASCAR fan. He realized a "bucket list" dream, racing in the Wild Cat Division at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, another place the family spent precious time together. Joe lived for his wife and children and worked tirelessly until mere weeks before his death. He was the epitome of resiliency, commitment, and devotion. He will be desperately missed. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Marguerite, an infant son, Joseph Francis Jr., brothers Liger and Thomas, sisters Irene and Rose, and his faithful companion (dog) Jack. He is survived by his mother's second husband, Earle Jordan, sisters Cecile Green, and Evelyn Parmenter, and their families, and a brother Charles Comeau and his family. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Norma Jean Comeau, son Joseph and his wife Dawn (Benoit) Comeau, and their three girls, Kayla, Faith, and Abby McNeice, son Daniel and his partner Alison Frank, son Thomas and his wife Maya Mahoney, daughter Danielle and her partner Erik Lloyd, and daughter Christy Comeau-Pierce and her husband Brian Pierce Sr., along with Brian's children, Brian Jr., Richard, Nicholas, and Rebecca Pierce, and their families. Joe is also survived by two men he loved like sons: his nephew Stephen Comeau (along with his wife Deb), and his business associate and dear friend Mark "The Carpet Guy" Flaherty. All are welcome to join in celebration of Joe's life on Saturday, May 31st at 11:00am at The Maine Irish Heritage Center (formally St. Dominic's Church), on the corner of State and Gray Streets, Portland, Maine.
