John Phillip Broida

1952 ~ 2015 Falmouth John Phillip Broida, a University of Southern Maine psychology professor who pioneered the use of technology in the classroom and became a stalwart champion of colleague and students, died on Sept. 6, 2015, from pancreatic cancer. He was at home surrounded by his family under the care of Hospice of Southern Maine. He was 63 years old. John was a dedicated husband and father and a deep thinker who relished his role as professor and mentor. He was cherished by friends, family and colleagues for his integrity, unpretentious manner, quiet strength and gentle humor. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1952 to Herbert Phillip Broida and Ina Burnes Broida. After a childhood in Bethesda, Maryland, they moved to Santa Barbara, California, where John attended junior and senior high school. The Broidas spent every summer in Boulder, Colorado, which John considered his hometown. John received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Colorado, where he was a proud member of the marching band. Putting his musical ambitions on hold, he pursued a Master's Degree in psychology from Western Illinois University and a Doctor of Psychobiology from The State University of New York at Albany. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern Maine in 1985. During his tenure, he received a grant from the National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse. Following a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts to develop an online psychology course at USM, he was named a Redesign Scholar of the Center for Academic Transformation, creating online and video-based courses. At the time of his death, he was in the process of creating an online course for Psychology 101 that'll feature video from some of his lectures. He also represented USM on the Contract Negotiating Committee for the University of Maine System Faculty Union and has served on the Steering Committee for the New England Psychological Association and was treasurer of that organization since 2006. At USM, he advocated for students and colleagues, and was known for his humble, self-deprecating manner. John married AnneMarie Catanzano in 1989 and they were joined by their son David Catanzano Broida in 1991. The family resided in Portland and Falmouth, where John volunteered with David's classrooms and Falmouth Youth Soccer. He was a dedicated husband and father. He enjoyed climbing Colorado mountains, walking Pine Point Beach and Baxter Boulevard with his dogs, and spending time with family at Embden Pond. He was predeceased by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife and son; his sister Allison Broida Kuehl, and her husband Greg of Baker City, Oregon; their children, Colin and Lindsey Kuehl; sister- in-law Carol Catanzano Tarbell and her husband Charles of Spring Hill, Florida; Burnes and Broida cousins; and close Portland area friends. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday September 12, 2015, at The Wishcamper Center of the University of Southern Maine, 44 Bedford Street, Portland at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow.
