Jane Tukey

Jane Thompson Tukey May 18, 1918 April 12, 2015 Scarborough Jane Thompson Tukey (AKA Janie, Jane from Maine} died on April 12, 2016 at Piper Shores in Scarborough. She was born May 18, 1918 the daughter of Dr. Philip and Jennie Means Thompson of Portland and South Portland. As a child Jane felt sorry for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Statue in Longfellow Park, as he sat all alone during the cold winter months, so she would take him warm donuts from home. She graduated from Portland and Deering High Schools in 1935. Her college years took her to Pine Manor with graduation from Simmons College School of Home Economics in 1939, and The Prince School of Retailing in 1940. Jane married the love of her life Philip E. Tukey on July 25, 1942. As a Fighter Pilot in the Army Air Corps, he was deployed to England and Jane returned home to her family. She quickly became involved with the American Red Cross as head of the Gray Ladies, worked at the Information Center tracking aircraft, and was employed at the Naval Supply Pier in the Command Office doing personnel work and chauffeuring. At that time she achieved one of her dreams and obtained her private pilot license as one of the first woman in Maine to accomplish this goal. When Philip returned home after WWII, he became the founding commander of the Maine Air National Guard in Bangor in 1948 - a position he held until his retirement in 1978. So to Bangor they went. Always an avid golfer and tennis player, she played tennis well until her 80's but gave up her racket when she became concerned she might fall and break a hip while running backwards. She enjoyed writing and all special occasions were celebrated with one of her quirky poems - a trait she passed on to her children. In Bangor Jane was active in the Junior League, the United Way, President of the YWCA (and especially loved her role as Molly Molasses), President of the Officer Wives (where she mentored many wives), and founder of the Bangor Woman's Investment Club. She loved to entertain and be the entertainment, and valued all the wonderful friendships she made and maintained. Fun was her middle name with her favorite activity being anything that might embarrass the 'Congenial' Ole General, her two daughters and any other unsuspecting poor soul. She is predeceased by her husband Brig. Gen. Philip Tukey, her daughter Martha Gay Tukey, and brother John Thompson. She is survived by her loving daughter Linda Mary Tukey and her partner Edgar Therrien of Standish who have supported her during her decline into Dementia, grandson Christopher Chesaux of Buxton, great granddaughter Janieva Chesaux and her mother Mathala Chesaux, Jane's brother Dr. Philip Thompson, as well as a large extended family. A celebration of her life will be celebrated at a later date. As she frequently rhymed: Jane from Maine is a pain in the brain. She loves to dance and sing in the rain.
