Geraldine Marie Barry Wynne

Geraldine Marie Barry Wynne passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on the morning of March 7, 2025. Born in Boston to John and Helen (Noonan) Barry on June 30, 1949, she was the third of four surviving children. After spending her first five years in Medford, the family relocated to Portland, Maine where her father worked for Hood Dairy. She had fond childhood memories of playing outside with her siblings, neighborhood friends, and her fox terrier Duke. She attended grammar school at St. Patrick’s and earned her high school diploma from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1967. In 1972, she graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in social work. While at USM, she met fellow student Raymond Wynne. From the start, he was impressed by her brains, beauty, and independent nature, and she appreciated his devotion, drive, and sense of adventure. They married at St. Patrick’s Church on June 26th, 1976, and celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last year. After college, Gerry was a social worker at Portland City Hall before taking time off to welcome their children Maureen, Patrick and Kerry. She was a devoted mother and loved them unconditionally. She and Ray raised them to understand that love was the most important thing in life, and that hard work and true kindness to others are values to strive for. Once the kids were in school, Gerry went back to work, spending 31 years employed by the L.L. Bean at the call center in Portland. She was well liked, respected, and honored with the “Bean’s Best Award” in 1998. In addition to her work at Beans and Ray’s career as a teacher, they ran Town & Country Driver’s Education School in the1980s. Somehow, she still managed to make her children her first priority at all times and was thrilled that they found happiness and solid ground as adults. She was very proud of their accomplishments, including their work as an educator, firefighter, and nurse. Gerry and Ray enjoyed many wonderful years of retirement before her health began to fail. In addition to welcoming nine grandchildren over nine years, they also travelled the world. Some favorite trips included many plays on Broadway, Ireland, Bermuda, Hawaii, Iceland, France, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and a Caribbean cruise. More than anything, though, she and Ray loved hosting family gatherings in their Portland home, creating memories that their children and grandchildren will cherish forever. Geraldine was predeceased by her parents, her stillborn older sister Mary, her older brother John “Jack” Barry, brother-in-law Walter Hayes, and many loyal canine companions she relished in spoiling. She is survived by her loving husband Raymond, her daughter Maureen Best and her husband Michael, son Patrick and his wife Cara Armstrong, and daughter Kerry LeBlanc and her husband Matthew. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Ramona and Annika Best, Bryn, Madigan, and Finnian Wynne, Nolan, Sean, and Helen LeBlanc, and special bonus granddaughter Mikayla (Patrick and Cara’s niece). She is also survived by her older sister Bernadette Hayes, sister-in-law Cherie Barry, her younger sister and lifelong best friend, Mary Steinhagen and her husband Paul, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and her Australian Terrier Boomerang. May the road rise to meet you, Mom. You couldn’t have done any better. The family wishes to thank the neighbors on Groveside Road for their snow-blowing, homemade brownies, and support over the past seventeen months. A Memorial service honoring Gerry’s life will be held 11 Am Saturday March 15th at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, with visitation from 9 Am until time of service.
