Ennio Angelo Cestaro

Ennio Angelo Cestaro August 15, 1930 February 22, 2016 Ennio Cestaro passed away peacefully on February 22, 2016 at his home at The Woods At Canco, Portland, Maine following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in NY City, NY. On August 15, 1930 to Goivanni and Maria Chiappetta Cestaro. They lived in Barre, Vermont during his youth. Ennio and his family migrated to their native Italy from 1938 through 1947, unable to return due to World War II. During that time, Ennio attended the Brocchi Collegio and the Vitorelli Business Institute to further his education. Following his return to The United States, he resided in the North End of Barre, Vermont with his family. He eventually met his future wife, Diana Masi. Thoughts of marriage were put on hold however, as Ennio served in the US Army during the Korean war conflict. He utilized his fluent Italian speaking to participate in military intelligence during his enlistment. Following completion of Top Secret Military Clearance, Ennio spent his tour of duty as a classified specialist Italian Exchange Liaison Leader. In 1954, he returned to Barre, where he continued the courtship and eventually married his wife of 61 years, Diana Masi Cestaro. They resided at 48 Railroad Street, in the heart of the ethnic North End of Barre. Ennio was very successful in the private sector, starting as an Office Manager for Milgolla Machinery Corp., and progressed to Assistant Controller for Jordon Milton Machinery. From 1966-1984, Ennio was the Chief Production Planner for Rock of Ages Capacitor Corp. in Barre, where he helped lead their expansion into New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and beyond. He retired at 55 after a successful career, Ennio was an avid sports fan. He passionately followed the Red Sox, constantly lamenting during their down years of the 50's and early 60's. Equally, he was a die-hard Patriot fan, which caused constant family bickering with his son, who was a Giants fan. Ennio was heavily involved during the strong competitive years of Barre Youth sports in the 60's. He was President of the Barre Little League, President of Barre Community Baseball, and the Vermont Babe Ruth League Treasurer. He and his family enjoyed the deep run that the Barre Little League had in 1965, almost reaching the Little League World Series. Ennio was an active member of the Barre social club scene. He was a longtime member of Barre Elk's Lodge #1535. He had various positions at the Elks in the 70's and 80's, including being their auditor, state trustee, and lead fundraiser. Ennio's true passion was to embrace his Italian heritage. He held positions in the Vermont Italian-American Heritage Group, and helped the advancement of Italian American culture in Central Vermont though out his time in Barre Ennio was a distinguished 50 year member of Mutuo Soccorso , where he held various management positions during his tenure, including being a four term President. His efforts also included being treasurer, secretary, and team lead on various fund raising efforts. Ennio is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Diana Masi Cestaro, his son, Claude Cestaro of Portland Maine, his grandson, Cameron Cestaro and wife, Katie of Westbrook, Maine, and his grandson Connor Cestaro of Portland Maine. The family would like to thank the many healthcare professionals who became part of our family during Ennio's health decline. Specifically, we thank the many dedicated team members of Maine Health Cancer Specialists, Maine Medical Partners Urology Center, practitioners at Martin's Point Health Care Center Portland, and especially the caring staff of the Hospice of Southern Maine. Equally, we want to personally thank our private night care nurse Kimberly Mngqibisa, whose compassion and care was heartfelt, and tremendously appreciated. A Mass of Remembrance will be conducted by longtime family friend, Father Leo Bilodeau, at St. Monica's Parish Barre Vermont on March 3rd at 1pm.
