Douglas Ray Lewis,Jr.

Douglas R. Lewis, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26, 2020 in Scarborough, Maine with his wife Adelaide and family members by his side. He was 90 years old. The son of Irish and Canadian immigrants, Doug was born to Hester Mary O'Sullivan and Douglas Ray Lewis, Sr. on July 12, 1930 in Boston, MA. When Doug was ten years old, the Lewis family moved to the farming town of Sudbury, MA, where he graduated in 1948 from the Sudbury schools and spent most of his life until retirement. Growing up in the Great Depression, Doug was an industrious young man who worked hard to help support his mother and sisters Sheila and Hester, while their father was a Security Specialist overseas during the war. When he wasn't doing his chores, he traveled the country roads on his pony named Teddy and spent time with his good friend Paul Griffin. Throughout his life, Doug was a gentleman farmer, planting vegetables gardens in the spring and tending to many animals, including dogs, chickens, pigs, and cows. Doug often spoke of meeting the girl that he would one day marry as he hitched a ride on Horse Pond Road in Sudbury - that was the day that he'd met Adelaide Wilson, 5 years later they were married. They began their life in a house that they'd built together, raising 13 children, welcoming 36 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren into their lives over the years. The Lewis family hosted many celebrations at their home, weddings, baptisms, birthdays, graduations with lots of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in attendance - everyone was welcomed. He joined the army in 1950 before his marriage to Adelaide, and was one of the soldiers who'd lined Pennsylvania Avenue during Eisenhower's inauguration in 1953, he was Commander of the American Legion Post #191 in Sudbury for 2 years. After driving a truck for a few years, he started his own business that eventually became Lewis Transportation Inc., employing family and friends, where he was fondly known to many as Horace. Prior to his retirement to Maine, Doug worked for the town of Sudbury for ten years as the Supervisor of town buildings. He was a lifetime member of the 4th degree, and past Grand Knight of the Fr. Hurley Council of the Knights of Columbus in Sudbury MA. He was a communicant and founding member of Our Lady of Fatima parish in Sudbury. Over the years, the family would vacation on the lakes of New Hampshire or take the camper to visit family in New Brunswick Canada, also visiting Nova Scotia and camping along the Cabot trail. Horace, along with the Lewis boys and friends, spent many fall hunting seasons in a cabin in Canada, telling stories, and who knows what else, sometimes returning with a deer. Doug and Addie also enjoyed multiple riverboat cruises on the Mississippi River Queen and if you had the time, you could sit and view his slides taken on their Alaskan cruise. They traveled outside of the country to Ireland, Italy, Germany and Bosnia, where they visited the site of the Apparition on the hill in Medugorje. In 1998 they retired to Bristol, ME, where they attended St. Patrick's church in Newcastle. They enjoyed their retirement in Maine, making new friends in the area and hosting many family gatherings at the new homestead. In 2016 they moved into Oceanview Assisted Living in Falmouth, ME and attended Holy Martyrs parish. He was a loving man, a good provider, a story teller, and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, family and friends alike. Living by example, he taught his children to work hard, and if you always do right, you'll never go wrong. He was immensely proud of his family and grateful to have been married to the "love of his life" for over 69 years. We are blessed to call him our father. Doug was predeceased by his parents Hester Mary O'Sullivan & Douglas Ray Lewis, Sr., his Aunt Eileen Whitworth, his cousin Denis Whitworth and lifetime friend, Paul Griffin. He leaves behind his beloved wife Adelaide Lewis and his 13 children - Mary & Jesse Senore of Gray, ME, Michael & Patti Lewis of Chapel Hill, NC, Danny & Jessica Lewis of Westbrook, ME, John & Lisa Lewis of Chatham, NH, Joanne & Jack Kennedy of Portland, ME, Paul Lewis of Chatham, NH, Brian & Cindy Lewis of Sudbury, MA, Denis & Marie Lewis of Sudbury, MA, Andrew & Stephanie Lewis of Sudbury, MA, Martha & Robert Magdaleno of Stow, MA, Doug Lewis III of Weare, NH, Tom & Michele Lewis of New Braintree, MA and Maggie Quinlan of Bristol, ME. 36 grandchildren/spouses - Katie Senore, Lauren Senore, Elena/Scott Corliss & Meghan/Patrick Nee; Jennifer/Larry Cox, Christi Lewis, Courtney/Steve Foster & Michael/Kim Lewis; Danielle Lewis/Joe Vandeventer, David Lewis, Eric Lewis & Theresa/Chuck Norton; Charlotte Lewis & Laura Lewis; John Kennedy & Matthew/Kate Kennedy; Stephanie Lewis, Brenda Lewis, Emily Lewis & Brian Lewis; Jon Lewis, Catherine Lewis & Conor Lewis; Cooper Lewis & Alison Lewis; Adam Magdaleno, Joseph Magdaleno & Sophia Magdaleno; Samantha Lewis, Sydney Lewis & Doug Lewis IV; Madeline Lewis, Sarah Lewis & Will Lewis; Stephen Quinlan & Anna Quinlan. 17 great-grandchildren - Adelaide Corliss; Chloe, Benjamin & Bradley Cox; Emerson & Finnegan Herrera, Patrick, Eleanor and Joseph Lewis; Drew Foster; Ciera Lewis - Vandeventer & Jonathan Vandeventer and Caroline Norton; Evelyn, Ethan, Benjamin Kennedy and Ebba Copeland-Kennedy. He also leaves his sisters Sheila Boyce of Sudbury, MA, Hester & Bill Tinti of Salem, MA, his brother-in-law John Wilson of Sudbury, MA, and many nieces and nephews. A private mass will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth, ME - the service will be streamed online. At a later date, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima, Sudbury, MA interment will be at Wadsworth Cemetery. The Lewis Family would like to thank the many people who prayed for Doug and our family in recent weeks, as well as, the medical professionals at Maine Medical Center and The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the care and compassion he received..
