Charles B. Rodway, Jr. August 25, 1931 June 24, 2012 Scarborough - Charles B. Rodway, Jr., 80, died on June 24th at the Gosnell House, after a long illness. The son of Reverend Charles B. Rodway, he was born in Portland, Maine and has been a lifelong resident of the greater Portland area. Mr. Rodway was a graduate of Potter Academy in Sebago, Portland Junior College and the University of Maine School of Law. Having passed the Maine Bar in 1955, Mr. Rodway was admitted as a member of the Maine Bar and the Federal District Court. He was married to the former Frances Hilton and together they raised six children living for many years on Brook Road in Falmouth Maine. In 1987 he married Nancy Warden. In his retirement he & Nancy enjoyed extensive travel and cruising. After graduating from the University Of Maine, he started his law career with the former Attorney General, Alexander LeFleur. Later he was appointed to the position of Deputy Clerk of Courts by Frederick Johnson, and succeeded him as Clerk for several years. In 1966, Mr. Rodway ran for and was elected to the position of Clerk of Courts and served in that post for six years. After completion of his term as Clerk of Courts, Mr. Rodway was appointed as Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court. He also served as the District Court complaint Justice, bail commissioner and dedimus justice. In 1970 he was named as a Fellow for the Institute for court management in Denver, Colorado. During this period he was noted for his suggestion that a jury of twelve was not necessary, saying that a lesser number of six jurors would serve equally as well in civil cases. Mr. Rodway was responsible for introducing legislation which resulted in effecting this reduction. He was a member of the US Coast Guard Reserves, the Woodfords Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Kora Shrine Temple and the State Bar Association. Along with his brother Frank, he was involved in a number of tax reclamation and real estate development activities in the early 1950's. Mr. Rodway taught, for several years at the USM Law School and was a Sunday school teacher at the Falmouth Congregational Church. He also served as the Sunday school superintendent as well as deacon and trustee. He, along with his wife Nancy, were active in the Church's "soup kitchen" program. Charlie was best known, among his family and friends, as a humorist and jokester and he was good at it....most of the time. Playing Santa Claus for his children and many other community functions was one of his favorite pastimes. Surviving are his wife Nancy, children, Judith Holt of Houston Texas, Charles Rodway of Brewer, Maine, Nancy Stanley of Porter Maine, Peter Rodway of Falmouth Maine, David Rodway of Rangeley Maine and James Rodway of Falmouth Maine. His is also survived by his brothers Frank & Ralph and sister Claudia. Mr. Rodway also has 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The memorial service will be held Thursday June 28th at 11am at the Falmouth Congregational Church, with a reception to follow at the church. The family will have a private interment service after the reception at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth.
