Charles J. Milos March 4, 1923 September 23, 2014 Scarborough - Charles J. Milos, 91, of Scarborough, passed away on September 23, 2014. He was born on March 4, 1923 in West Rutland, VT, son of and Frances (Cebula) Milos. One of eight siblings, Mr. Milos spent his youth in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific in WWII and mobilizing again for the Korean Conflict. Drawn to The Ohio State University on the GI Bill, he met and married a lovely local girl, Evelyn Smith, newly graduated from nursing school. He worked his way through college with jobs as a butcher and a commercial artist, then began a career in business. He retired as general manager of an SC Johnson Company. He and Evelyn raised a son and daughter in central Ohio, where he was an active member of Kiwanis, the Masons and Canal Winchester Methodist Church. He was a private pilot for nearly three decades, and held a real estate brokerage license for many years. He was also a hobby farmer, raising peanuts and popcorn in addition to the usual garden fare. Subsequent to his retirement, Chuck and Evelyn bought a travel agency franchise and commenced their career in travel. Alone and together, they visited such diverse locations as Lake Baikal (Russia), the Panama Canal, Alaska, Poland and Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands at which he'd spent the war years. Chuck pursued diverse interests in business and in his personal life. To his great pleasure, he helped create new capitalists among the Central American casino workers to whom he rented apartments at Lake Tahoe. Through trust and fairness, co-signing loans and teaching the basics of finance, a number of his tenants would themselves go on to become property owners and advance to the middle class. They lived for 15 years at Lake Tahoe in Nevada and in Brentwood, California, moving to Maine on a fulltime basis in 2003. Chuck was honest, pleasant, resourceful and artistic. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn; son, Michael, and his wife Sue of Menlo Park, CA; his daughter, Laurel, of South Portland; grandchildren Joshua (Michelle), Jared (Lacy) and Brooke, and three great-grandchildren all of California. A special thanks to the staff of Piper Shores for their superb care of Chuck in his last years. A reception hosted by Chuck's family will be held at Piper Shores on October 3 from 3-5 p.m.
