Anna Marie Axelsen

Portland- Anna A. Axelsen 87, passed away on February 26, 2020 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House and is now residing with her Lord and savior in heaven. She was born October 3, 1932 in West Enfield ME, the daughter of Marinus and Flora (Playze) Lindquist. The family moved to Kennebunk ME in 1946. She is survived by sisters, Emma J. Clark & husband David of Henderson, NV and summers in Alfred ME, Doris E. Rheaume of Syracuse NY, four children, Edmund P. Hannaford & Gail of Portland, Deborah L. Eaton & Robert of Watkinsville GA, Theresa M. Suse & James of Brimfield MA., Karen L. Paradis & Tom of Portland, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, also counted as a daughter by her is Mary Bol and her two children as grandchildren. Lindquist, she also predeceased by first husband Alfred (Rick) Hannaford, and second husband Alfred J. Axelsen, and her son Gerald R. Hannaford. Anna grew up and attended school in Enfield until her parents moved to Kennebunk in 1946 where she continued school until marrying Alfred Hannaford and starting a family in 1948. They lived most of their married lives in Suffield CT where she concentrated on raising her family. Anna was a passionate follower of Christ and an active member of her church where she participated as a children's Sunday School Teacher at the Church of the Nazarene in Springfield MA for most of her adult life. They divorced in 1966, she moved to Springfield MA with her four youngest children. Anna received her GED and then studied and graduated with an LPN degree which she utilized for the rest of her working life. While working at Wesson Women's Hospital she would travel to Kennebunk to care for her mother. During this period, she met Alfred Axelsen and they married in 1975. They lived in Portland but spent many summers at a camp on Little Sebago that Al had built. There were lots of fun times with family as she enjoyed sharing time on the lake especially with her grandkids. Anna was caring for people in their homes and transitioned to a live-in caregiver until 2012 when she retired. The last patient was Raymond Greenleaf who also became a dear friend to her and her family. In 2010 she became a regular attender and member of Community of Grace Church in Westbrook. Anna lived with her daughter Karen and Tom Paradis until September of 2019 when she moved into Cape Memory Care in Cape Elizabeth. She loved to read and study the Bible, make puzzles, do crosswords, and play scrabble (sometimes against herself). She always enjoyed getting mail and writing letters to friends and family, often enclosing a picture or a copy of a news item that she thought they would enjoy.
