Alfred Roland Schwabenhausen "Swabby" 1947 April 20, 2012 Alfred Roland Schwabenhausen was known to most as simply ""Swabby."" He died Friday, April 20 surrounded by his family, listening to his favorite song ""When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going."" His wife Mary Lou confesses he may have loved the TV show Regis and Kelly slightly more than he loved her, but they were married almost 45 years so she could handle that realization. He had three daughters - Becky Sue Delcourt, Lori Anne Schwabenhausen, and Sue Ann Wright - and he made sure they each knew how to pitch a tent, clean a fish, and drive a manual transmission, which he considered life-long skills. He also made sure they remained connected forever when he chose their names. He enjoyed memorable moments with his sons-in-law: he witnessed Earnhardt's historic Daytona 500 win with Mark Delcourt, he and Patrick Andriano regaled us with tales of the Marine Corps, and he never let Craig Wright forget they had to walk the equivalent of 3 football fields to find a beer at a Notre Dame game. He adored his 5 grandchildren: Marie, Melanie and Mitchell Delcourt; Marcus Andriano; and Cooper Wright - all of whom found their ""Pop"" hysterical, which made him particularly proud. He would pretend to be upset if any of them beat him at a game, especially Skip-Bo. A life-long Portland resident, Swabby was often seen in his postal truck delivering mail for his Cumberland Foreside route. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 2003 after 37 years of service and started a brief career in golf until arthritis affected his perfect swing. He was an avid fisherman (salt or lake), a supreme hunter (if you believe the stories), and a former U.S. Marine. He also looked forward to spending one week a year on Fort Myers Beach, FL and waking at dawn to tackle the daily crossword puzzle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you turn to someone you love, right now, and tell them so; and, if you knew Swabby, share a great story or memory about him with anyone who will listen. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 27 from 4-7 pm at A.T. Hutchins, LLC Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave in Portland, with full military honors starting at 7 pm. The family will have a private burial service.
