Adrien Arthur Noble, Jr

Adrien Arthur Noble, Jr. October 14, 2012 Portland - Adrien Arthur Noble Jr. of Portland died on Oct. 14 at Mercy Hospital. He was born in Portland, the son of Adrien Arthur and Arie Annie (Barker) Noble Sr. He attended local schools. He left Deering High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Maine and earned sufficient credit to be awarded his high school diploma from Deering High School in 1949. After World War II, Adrien worked as chauffeur, as a door to door salesman for the Fuller Brush Company, and then in 1959, joined Milliken Tomlinson Company, a grocery warehouse firm from which he retired in March of 1990. During World War II, He served in: Newport, R.I., Norfolk, Va., Baltimore, Md., and on board the USS Moreno (ATF 87) an ocean-going tug boat. He would tell stories of traveling thru the Panama Canal towing vessels and sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. He enjoyed talking about current events especially politics. You really knew Arthur in just five minutes, spending five with (Art) as he was also known and the world was a better place. He loved the outdoors as much as he loved honest people. A true Mainer, Art was a talk(ah) and demonstrated this irreplaceable skill at all times. His stories and one liners were uniquely clever, uniquely his. Art enjoyed working the farm with his cousins in North Leeds , relaxing with extended family at the Barker Pond camp in Sebago, spending time with his cousin and best friend Dave Merrill, and shoveling snow at his home of 50 years in Portland; well perhaps not the shoveling part. We will remember Arthur as thoughtful, big hearted, inspiring, and lots o fun. He was predeceased by his wife, Flora, who he married in 1950. He is survived by sons: Michael and his wife Cassandra of Florida, Doug of Portland; grandchildren: Wendy and Samantha of Florida; Sister, Cindy and her husband Don Travis of Texas; brothers: Warren and his wife Dorothy of Massachusetts, Stephen and his wife Marion of California; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service to celebrate Adrien's life will be held in July of 2013. The family would like to extend special thanks to the caring staff and doctors at the Barron Center and Mercy Hospital critical care unit and the 4th floor nurses and staff.
