Sabato "Sam" Louis DiPhilippo November 17, 1934 November 11, 2016 Sabato ""Sam"" L. DiPhilippo passed away Friday, November 11, 2016 at the age of 81. He was born in Portland, the son of Orlando DiPhilippo and Angelina Ezzo. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Saint Joseph's Manor, where he received outstanding care from the staff and his loving daughter Catherine. Sam was a graduate of Deering High School in 1953 and was an outstanding football player. He then attended Portland Junior College for three years and then served our country as a member of the U.S. Army for two years, receiving an honorable discharge. After he returned to Portland, Sam worked for the Maine Central Railroad for seven years. He then worked as an entrepreneur for two years before taking a job with the U.S. Postal Service. While employed in Portland, he took great pleasure in football officiating for the local high schools. He was also one of the forces in creating ""Tid Bit"" Football in the Portland area. He also loved to coach his sons in baseball. He became an avid golfer who worked and played at Riverside Golf Course for many years. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family. Sam is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Frances DiPhilippo of Portland; brothers, Michael DiPhilippo of Boston and Rocco DiPhilippo of Portland; four children, Michael, Gerald, and Samuel DiPhilippo and Catherine O'Donnell; and nine grandchildren, Anthony, Gabrielle, Olivia, Emma, Nicholas, Grace and Sophia DiPhilippo and Mackenzie and John O'Donnell. Although Sam is not here physically anymore, he will always be with us. We will always remember his laugh, his smile, his encouragement, and his love. Thank you husband, Dad, and Papa for everything you've done for us. Visitation will take place from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 18, 2016 at St. Peter Parish. A private family burial service will take place at a later date.
