Maurice "Moe" E. Ducharme October 23, 1930 January 9, 2012 Maurice "Moe" Ducharme passed away on the morning of January 9, 2012 after a long illness. Anyone who knew Moe wouldn't be surprised to hear that he died peacefully and with grace. Moe took his illness in stride, enjoying every moment of every day with almost childlike wonder. His only worry was for how others were handling it. He didn't want to cause a fuss. Born on October 23, 1930 in Lewiston Maine to Adrien and Bernadette (LaPointe) Ducharme "He had a wonderful sense of humor," remembered his daughter, Vickie. "He enjoyed making people laugh - even when things got tough. He wrapped his love in humor and shared it selflessly. He also used his humor to broach difficult subjects, and it made it easier to talk with him. He just had a knack for it." But humor isn't the only thing people remember about Moe. He had moxie. Known as the "Mayor" of Deering Pavilion where he lived for the past 10 years, Moe was the ambassador of good cheer. He loved to give of himself and make others happy, from the friendly notes he left on the other residents' doors to affixing his trademark smiley face stickers on the daily menus. Moe made sure everyone had a little bit of sunshine every day, and his friends returned the favor in ways that were special to Moe - like the 1000 tootsie rolls he got for his 80th birthday. As a young man, Moe Joined the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. Moe was fiercely proud of his time spent in the Marines, and it was here he learned the value of discipline. You could see it in his neatly-organized home. Moe's appreciation for "everything in its place" became an integral part of his life. This strict sense of order served Moe well, beginning with his work at General Electric (from where he retired after thirty years) and extending to his life-long penchant for making people happy. In fact Moe was so organized he never forgot a birthday or any other important occasion, right down to hand-addressing and mailing over 130 Christmas cards this past holiday. In a word, Moe is irreplaceable, and it's not hard to see how he found his way into so many people's hearts. "He was loving, kind, generous, and thoughtful," says Vickie. "He was grateful for everything he had." In recent years he even shared a pen-pal relationship with local school children Christin and Madison Weatherbee, a pastime that brought great joy to all of them. To Moe, being able to reach out and brighten someone's day also served to brighten his. He found particular delight in attending his very dear friend Mazie Colley 100th birthday party. Moe is survived and dearly missed by his beloved daughters Deb Ducharme-Steward of Hampden ME, Vickie Ducharme of Portland ME and beloved grandson Logan Steward of Hampden ME; his remaining siblings who were all very dear to him, including sister Charlotte Francoeur of Millinocket, ME, brother and sister-in-law O'Neal and Patricia Ducharme of Palm Harbor FL., and brother Richard Ducharme of Lewiston ME; Favorite sister-in-law Christine Ducharme of Lewiston ME, his weekly companion and "adopted" daughter Brooke Butler; his close friend and former neighbor Sister Jude Murray, who had a magnificent impact on Moe's life and vice versa; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends. He was predeceased by his son Dale. A Memorial Service will be held at the Basilica of Saint's Peter and Paul in Lewiston Maine on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Maurice Ducharme will be laid to rest next to his son, Dale Arthur Ducharme at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Somersworth NH. The family also wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Laura Blutstein for the many years of care and attention she provided, together with the staff of VNA Home Health and Hospice who helped make his journey more pleasant.
