PORTLAND – Richard “Dick” K. Newell, 93, died November 20, 2017 at the Maine Veterans Home after a brief illness. He was born June 11, 1924, in Portland, ME, the son of the late Albert E and Edith M. (Milliken) Newell.

Dick graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1943. After graduation he served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After his military service, he attended the Portland School of Art and worked at the Portland Lithograph Company. His loved ones remember him for his sense of humor and his selfless dedication to helping others; his hobbies included photography, painting, and woodworking.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Marie S.(Casassa) Newell, his sisters Alice and Helen, and his brother Albert E. “Eddie” Jr.. He is survived by his daughters Nancy M. South of New Albany, Indiana, Linda E. Ireland of Auburndale, Florida,  and Claudia Newell of Portland, Maine, his sisters Marion DiFiore, of South Portland, Pauline French of Ansonia Connecticut, and Emily DeQuina of Tempe, Arizona, his brother and sister-in-law Frank W. and Rosemary Newell of Saco and many nieces and nephews. His family expresses thanks for the devoted care he received in his later years from the staff of Home Partners, the Barron Center, Maine Medical Center, and the Maine Veterans Home, Scarborough.

Visiting hours are from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral home in Portland.  A funeral will be held at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home at 10 A.M. on Thursday, November 30, 2017

 A private burial will be held at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Learning Works: https://www.learningworks.me/
