Norman R. Leighton

September 15, 1935 ~ July 17, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old

 

Norman R. Leighton, 81, of Portland, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 17, 2017, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough surrounded by his loving family.

 

He was born in Portland on September 15, 1935, the son of Chester and Glenyis (Jones) Leighton. Norman served his country in the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He was also stationed in Germany during his service time; Norman enjoyed Germany even learning the language. Upon his return from the service he had a long career as a Heating and Refrigeration Engineer.

 

He was very involved in fraternal organizations, serving with the Knights of Columbus reaching the level of Grand Knight. He was also a member of the American Legion and The Improved Order of Red Men.

 

Norman enjoyed being with his family the most; his grandchildren were his rays of sunshine. He also had a love for strawberry shortcake and most other desserts.

 

He is predeceased by three brother, and two sisters.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Josephine (Viscone) Leighton of Portland five sons James Leighton and his wife Paula of Standish, Michael Leighton and his wife Ann of Lewiston, Stephen Leighton and his wife Pam of Charleston, SC, David Leighton and his wife Pam of Rochester, NH and Marc Leighton and his wife Beth of Windham, also 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was also survived by two sisters and a brother.

 

Visiting Hours will be on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 4- to 7pm at A.T. Hutchins funeral and cremation services 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00am at St. Peters Church in Portland. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
