Maurice G Fortin

August 28, 1943 ~ April 7, 2017 (age 73) 73 Years Old

Maurice G. Fortin, 73, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 after a two-year battle with cancer.   Throughout his life, he left a lasting and loving impact on his family, friends, and those he served throughout the community.  He will be missed by those lives that he touched and remembered for his patience, generosity, and kindness.

Maurice was born on August 28, 1943 in Brunswick, ME, the son of the late Frederick and Emilienne Fortin.  He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1961 and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1966 and began his career as a pharmacist.

Following college, Maurice first worked at Maine Medical Center as a staff pharmacist.  He then served as Director of Pharmacy at Waterville Osteopathic Hospital until 1985.  He returned to Maine Medical Center to be a clinical pharmacist in nutrition support through 2004.  He subsequently worked at Hannaford’s, New England Life Care, and Southern Maine Medical Center until his retirement in 2008.

On June 24, 1967, he and Collette L. Gagne were married in Brunswick, ME.  They were happily married for nearly 50 years and raised two sons.  A devoted husband and father, Maurice enjoyed many hobbies and was active throughout the community.  He supported his sons’ participation in the Boy Scouts of America and would often take the family camping to Mt. Blue State Park and other parks throughout the state.  He enjoyed fishing and in retirement would often drive out to western Maine and spend the day on his boat.

Maurice also enjoyed trains, building model trains and visiting railway museums whenever he travelled.  He was also active in Operation Lifesaver, presenting briefings to students and other audiences on the importance of railway safety.

A tenor, he was an avid singer and performed with the Kennebec Barbershop Chordsmen and the Portland Community Chorus often singing in the annual Magic of Christmas celebration at Portland City Hall auditorium.  Maurice was also an active member of St Peter’s choir.

He is survived by his wife Collette, his son Mark and wife Lisa, his son Michael and wife Christy, and his beloved grandchildren Elisabeth, Samuel, and Audrey.  He is also survived by his brother Fred and wife Louise, and his brother Clem and wife Doris.

His family would like to thank publicly Dr. Christian Thomas and his staff, the staff of Hospice of Southern Maine and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, and Fr. Greg Dube for their support during Maurice’s illness.  The family would also request that in lieu of flowers that those who wish to make memorial contributions consider donating to the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St, South Portland, ME, 04106 or the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074
