John H Johns

John H. Johns, 88, of Portland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Springbrook Center in Westbrook.  He was born on July 26, 1928, in Norwich, CT, the third son of Harry and Kaliope (Dolos) Johns.  John grew up in Portland and attended Portland High School where he excelled in baseball, football, and track.  After graduating from PHS in 1947, John enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War.  He then returned to Portland and began what would become a 35-year career at Burnham and Morrill.  Portland is also where John met the love of his life, Theresa (Conti).  They were married on May 9, 1959.  Together they raised four boys and shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. 

John loved to laugh, loved his family, and loved his life.  He cherished family gatherings, attending Catholic mass with his wife every Sunday morning, and entertaining his grandchildren.  John was well known for his often corny and offbeat jokes.  Music was a passion of his and he would frequently entertain family and friends by singing while playing songs on the organ in his living room.  He was an avid New England sports fan and will be remembered as a proud father, a wonderful grandfather, a loving uncle, and a faithfully devoted husband.

He is survived by his beloved wife Theresa; brother Nicholas Johns of Danbury; his sons Michael Johns and wife Kelly of Gorham, David Johns of Westbrook, Steven Johns and wife Rachel of Westbrook, Patrick Johns and wife Heidi of Portland; grandchildren Helen, Sabrina, Sebastian, and Angelica.  He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Alexander ‘Coolie’ Johns and Thomas Johns.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Springbrook Center for the compassionate care and comfort they provided.

Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28th at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland.  A private burial will take place at Forest City Cemetery on a later date.
