Welcome to the memorial page for

Emmett Mahoney

May 7, 1946 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 71) 71 Years Old

Emmett Mahoney, 71, of Kingfield, Maine died suddenly on January 17, 2018.  Born on May 7, 1946 in Hornell, NY.  He was the son or R. Emmett Mahoney and Thelma Olive White Mahoney.

Emmett graduated from Canisteo Central School in 1963 and then attended the University of Buffalo where he studied civil engineering.  He went on to earn his master’s degree in engineering science and become a licensed Professional Engineer.  Emmett spent the first 20+ years of his career at Air Preheater in Wellsville, NY where he became the Vice President of service.   He then moved to Howden Sirocco in Massachusetts where he worked until starting REMahoney, Co. and remained self-employed until his retirement.

An avid sports fan and athlete, Emmett spent several years as a high school basketball official and youth league coach.  He played in men’s leagues for many years and started running marathons in the 1980’s.  He remained extremely active until the time of his death, hiking or snow shoeing almost daily with his dogs.

His unyielding love of nature was forever apparent.  For the last several years of his life he worked diligently cutting trails on his land in Maine.   He utilized his engineering prowess to hand craft several bridges across the streams.  He tapped the trees for sap and even tried his hand at beekeeping and growing mushrooms.   Emmett also volunteered at Pine Tree Camp and Maine Huts and Trails.

Often a man of few words, Emmett had a wicked sense of humor and always kept people on their toes with his wit.  He was an avid reader and was constantly learning new and different things.  In his later years he developed a love of cooking and tried to develop a knack for fly-fishing.  He spent many hours tying his own flies.

Emmett played a vital role in the lives of his adoring grandchildren.  He followed their activities closely and texted them regularly.  Despite living several hours away, he attended countless games, shows, concerts and other celebrations.  His presence extended to friends, teammates, classmates and their families and will be missed by many.

Emmett is survived by his daughters: Kelly Mahoney (Keene Hammond) of Rochester, NY and Karen Williams (Joe) of Watertown, NY, grandchildren: Heather, Chris, Mike and Tim Williams of Watertown, Heidi and Emmett Schadt of Rochester and Cassidy, Austin and Sophia Hammond of Rochester along with his loving companion of several years, Christine Hopf-Lovette of Wiscasset, ME and last but certainly not least his best friends Lucy and Rikki.

In accordance with his wishes there will be no calling hours or service.  Anyone wishing to celebrate Emmett is encouraged to take a hike, learn something new or add a fairy house to the nature that surrounds you.  Donations in his honor can be made to Maine Huts and Trails, Pine Tree Camp or any charity of your choice that reflects his passions.
