C. Richard "Dick" MacWilliams passed away on January 4, 2017. He was a lifelong resident of Portland, born at St. Barnabus Hospital on January 8, 1930 to Emily and Elmer Cecil MacWilliams. He was raised in a home on Brighton Avenue and graduated from Deering High School in 1947. He attended Northeastern University for two years, receiving an associate's degree and then attended Bentley College and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. He later spent two years in the Navy, stationed on a destroyer during the Korean War, and was discharged in May, 1954. He married his beautiful, kind and loving wife of 62 years, Norma Jean Smith, that same year; they were married 62 years. He worked as an internal auditor for the Union Mutual (now Unum) insurance company for more than 30 years. He was also active in the national society of EDP auditors. He is survived by his wife and four children: daughter Lynne Karen Benson 59 and partner Glenn Curtis of Portland, daughter Pamela Jean LaRosa 56 and husband Joseph of North Reading, MA, son Bruce Alan MacWilliams 53 and wife Elizabeth of Salt Lake City, UT, and daughter Sandra Jean MacWilliams 46 of Cape Elizabeth. He was the proud Grandfather of 9 grandchildren Timothy Benson, Shari Woodard, Kate Askew, Matthew and Ryan LaRosa, Tucker and Cameron Raymond, and Brynne and Colleen MacWilliams and one great grandchild Ellie Woodard. He is also survived by his sister Carol Chadbourne. He was a wonderful husband, father and provider and had an avid interest in lighthouses, visiting many along the East coast as well as volunteering on the lightship Nantucket. He and his wife Norma enjoyed their winters in Englewood Florida where they had many friends from New England. They spent their summers with their children at the Four Seasons campground in Naples, ME. He and Norma also spent much of their retirement having amazing travel adventures. He will be sadly missed by all. His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Barron Center for their care over the past few months. There will be no formal services; the family will have a celebration of his life in the Spring.
